A 51 year old male patient came to us from Dubai (UAE) for the treatment of his morbid obesity. When he first came to us in April 2014, he weighed 144kg with a BMI of 51.6 kg/m2. He was suffering from severe uncontrolled type II DM, hypertension, Obstructive sleep apnea, anemia and a diabetic foot ulcer and taking at least 10-12 oral drugs for these illnesses. He was then educated about the various types of procedures for weight loss. He however decided to delay the surgery and came back to us after 6 months and by then had put on 6 kg and had reached a BMI of 52.5 kg/m2, and a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) of 11. We planned a laparoscopic mini gastric bypass for him, He recovered well and was discharged in 5 days. Today he is on regular follow up with us with well controlled sugars on one single oral medication (as against 3 drugs + insulin prior to surgery). He is not taking any medicines for all the other medical conditions that he was suffering from (hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetic foot ulcer- healed completely, OSAS- stopped snoring).
